Avance...all colours of the rainbow, especially Green

"We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children."
(Chief Seattle)

The growth and development of our communities, cities and business centres has a significant impact on our natural environment. The construction and operation of the buildings in which we live and work are responsible for the consumption of many of our natural resources, and many common building materials either contain substances harmful to human health or release such substances during their manufacture. Another significant element of a green building centres on energy use, both in the manufacture of building materials and in the lifespan of the structure. This typically means using better insulation, minimising the quantity of materials used, and choosing materials that use less energy in the production process and have higher lifetime values.

Avance is proud to be playing our role to reduce the impact of our carpets on the environment throughout the lifestyle of our products by increasing manufacturing efficiencies, using a significant percentage of recycled, reclaimed and sustainable raw materials, reducing our energy and water usage during manufacturing, and producing carpets that reduce the building's impact on human health and the environment.

Green Benefits

  • Avance is a member of the Green Building Council of South Africa, championing a collective cause – to accelerate the development and adoption of best green building practices, so that all buildings are designed, built and operated in an environmentally sustainable way allowing South Africans to live and work in healthy, efficient and productive environments.
  • Avance has a certificate of compliance from the Green Building Council of Australia in terms of product emissions – Green Star Office Design IEQ-13. This means that the level of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in our products complies with the lowest possible limits as defined by the council.
  • Avance 14 is BCF Polyester pile yarn - a first for South Africa – containing at least 20% recycled post-consumer drink bottles and is used in some of our carpet offerings. Being solution-dyed, this new yarn style does not require stock dyeing, thus saving water and energy. Avance 14 is compliant with the Green Building Council of South Africa's Green Star rating system. It has been thoroughly tested by the SABS for basic construction, simulated wear, pile crush, colour fastness and stability, passing all the requirements for Use Class 4 Medium Commercial applications.
  • Avance Carpets are manufactured at the Mill in Harrismith, which is dedicated to eco-friendly manufacturing processes and ensuring sustainability for future generations. Approximately four years ago, a new energy efficient steam boiler was installed, providing for lower carbon emission rates and improved thermal efficiency. The gardens around the factory draw water from an effluent treatment plant and wool waste is recycled internally. Other waste yarn gets reworked and sold on to secondary users for stuffing and fillings. Other energy saving methods includes replacing outdated tungsten lighting equipment with more efficient LED versions.
  • Up to 70% of our polyester and primary backings are made from recycled materials.

  • Support Local

    • We believe that the most important factor in achieving true sustainability is to buy local. This has benefits on a variety of levels, starting with the carbon footprint issue. Local goods have a far lesser impact on the environment than a product that is imported and has to be shipped or air freighted into the country. This vastly increases the amount of steps needed to get the item to the shelves of its final destination store. On another important level, buying local also provides employment as well as strengthening our economy. All Avance carpets are 100% proudly made in Harrismith, Freestate province, South Africa.

  • Health & Safety

    • Research has proven that textile floor coverings do not cause allergic reactions and provided they are vacuumed and cleaned regularly, are perfectly suitable for people who suffer from Asthma and allergies.
    • Carpets are soft and resilient and provide a safe, non-slip surface underfoot for children and the elderly. With so many injuries caused by falls, it makes sense to choose a floor covering that provides a measure of protection and minimises the risk of injury.
    • The dense pile of a carpet and its backing layer act as heat insulators which helps a room retain as much as 10% more heat. So it's better for heating and insulation purposes
    • Orthopaedic specialists agree that carpet is the ideal floor covering to counter the strain the body takes when walking on hard floors during the day and recommend that resilient carpets be fitted in offices to counteract such common problems as backache and joint pain.
    • In terms of fire performance, our ranges have been thoroughly tested and rated on a fire index for consumer peace of mind.
